glass city grid o1

I have long been fascinated by the complexities and graphic nature of the urban map, both vintage and modern. Whether they be the organized, pre-planned geometric grids of my San Diegan suburban development or the reactive, organic, rambling, quasi-organized chaos of a London borough… it is all curious and mesmerizing to me! With this piece, I played with both scenarios by assembling tiny sticks to create a wooden grid and painting it over with acrylic. I then stained the grid with diluted black McCaffery's ink laced with silver metallic dust, and finally layered the grid with glossy leveling gel. The end result is an “organic grid” with both a contemporary and vintage aesthetic.
