golden raintree o1

This piece is made up of the fallen sticks of the Golden Raintree, (or Chinese Flame Tree) a tree local to San Diego, and one I would pass everyday while out walking the dogs. Everyday throughout the fall, as the weather got cooler and the leaves turned colors and died, and the winds would blow these sticks down into piles on the sidewalk. These sticks had small knobs on both ends… not broken or splintered, but merely detached from the tree at a very specific joint. The top and bottom joints gave each stick it’s own dimension and structure. I found myself collecting these little pieces of nature’s art as opposed to mere sidewalk debris. If I was going to create an interesting wall sculpture with these, they would have to be cleaned, dipped in grey and white acrylic, painted in gold, treated with sealant, hand wound with jute, and finished off with a tiny dot of sparkling metallic dust.
